When do I hear my baby's heartbeat for the first time?

I am 10 weeks and we did not hear it. He ordered a blood test to confirm that I am pregnant and ordered an ultrasound for our next visit. He didn't seem too alarmed but when I told my friends they all seemed alarmed. Should I worry?
